Sometimes there is just not enough of the original binding to work with or the customer would just like a new look. In these cases the challenge becomes finding just the right new cover. Do you want a reproduction of the original or something totally different? Do you want a binding appropriate for the time for the general public or a presentation-type binding? Planning just the right binding for a book is half the fun.
In this case, the customer wanted a new binding to look old. It’s a little bittersweet to make a binding like this; at first, there is pride in a job well done – and then you have to beat it down. (Although, to be perfectly honest, the destruction aspect is kind of fun!)
